We’d been able to secure a week off work in early August, and, after much deliberation, we opted to head to Greece. We knew most of the islands would be packed full of holidaymakers from throughout Europe, so we thought it wise to head to the less touristy island of Lesvos. Lesvos, while part of Greece, is actually closer to Turkey than it is to the rest of Greece, so we crossed our fingers and hoped that the distance might mean the beaches would be less crowded. The easiest way to get to Lesvos from Turkey is to take an hour and a half ferry ride a mere 25 kilometers across the Mytilini Strait. There are two ferry ports in Turkey that will get you to Lesvos; we chose to depart from the town of Ayvalik, an overnight bus ride southwest from Istanbul. People had told us over and over how amazing buses in Turkey are, so we were looking forward to our first Turkish bus experience. After a day of classes, we threw the necessities into a pack and walked up to Taksim, just in time to grab the service bus to the company’s main bus station on the Asian side. A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Heraklion, Greece by TravelPod blogger Trishherzog titled "Cretan Adventures" Trishherzog’s travel blog entry: "Cretan Adventures After breakfast, we headed down to the beach to hitch a boat over to the island of Spinalonga and hiked all around the island for 2 hours. Inhabited as early as the 1500s and used as a defensive fort and later a leper colony, it was a unique experience. We can best describe it as taking you back to childhood if you liked to play cowboys and indians or hide and seek. Great fort-like perches everywhere you look. A couple of times as we were scaling up to the top, we imagined that all we needed was a beret and a rifle and we’d be in one of those Spanish Resistance movies! Tad came back down and told us he’d seen goats up at the top, so nothing to do but hike up there and try to see for ourselves . . . we saw not a trace of a goat and while he insisted he saw one, we’re pretty sure he was pulling our leg. One interesting item of note was the so-called handicapped ramp in front as you go in. We’re pretty sure a wheelchair wouldn’t make it over those boards. Next plan was to go grab our suits and get some pool time, but alas, it began to rain. Plan B was to venture down to the little village of Platka near the resort. Good thing we took our umbrellas, ‘cuz it poured puppies and kittens for awhile. We slipped into a couple of shops and picked up a few souvenirs and then sat by the shore for a bit <b>…</b>

We found Sox almost 9 years ago. We had only a few months ago just moved into our new home, with us were Luna, Genny, and Mavy. A short scrawny black and white kitten came on our porch and rubbed up against us. Dad didn’t want another cat, so we gave this kitten some food on our porch and left it at that, not giving another glance. The next day, she returned, and we did the same. We weren’t sure how old she was, or where she was originally from, and no matter how many posters we put up, no one claimed her. Eventually, dad gave in, and we named her Sox, taking her in, and giving her a good place to call home. When we got a dog named Rio, we had no idea Rio had a problem with small animals, and he went after her. Sox came out with only a missing toe nail, and a bit mentally scared, but all was fine. We gave Rio to a older man who was looking for a hunter dog, and Rio soon became his. Sox then had a small set of kittens, all born on the 4th of July. Each named Strips, Star, Miss Independent, America, and blackie. Sadly, Strips didn’t make it. The rest of the kittens, thankfully, found great homes, and though I don’t know how they are today, I know that they are memories of this kitten. We knew by the time we were ready to move, we couldn’t take Sox with us, because we knew she wouldn’t handle the trip, so we gave her and out cat Phantom to our friend. woke up to my pregnant kitty trying to snuggle my face. edit: not even an hour after i took this video, annie (the calico) had given birth to her first kitten. Mimi (black one in background) is now very jealous and is running around the house looking for attention.
